Stray dogs are being skewered on hooks and dragged behind boats as live shark bait, The Sun shockingly revealed a few days ago. The cruel practice takes place on French-controlled Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean.
A six-month-old labrador pup was recently found alive with a huge double hook through its snout - like the dog in the picture - and another through a leg.
The pup was found in a coastal creek and is thought to have somehow freed itself from a fishing line.
But other dogs and kittens have been chomped up and swallowed by sharks.
The RSPCA plans to petition the French government, demanding an end to the hideous torture.

What a horrible story Eurodog. I can't believe people would be so cruel. Of course I will sign.

hello from Portugal! Can I sign petition not being french? That is such an horrible pratice.Only people that are heartless can do such a thing! My nephew has a shar pei and a blog about the dog.I am going to post it there too. It's my first time here on your blog.I allways loved dogs but since my sister got the shar pei I learned a lot about them:they are marvellous.
This is totally disgusting. I was over here (from James) earlier, but I couldn't access either your comments of the petition - Blogger's been slow to impossible for me this evening. I've managed at last.
I find it so hard to believe that this sort of thing goes on.
I've been following the links in the net trying to get an update on those news. Both The Sun and National Geographic news are from 2005.I sure would like to know if this thing is still going on.More disturbing here's what I read: Bardot organization has been trying to put an end to it for more than one decade!Poor animals...
Belinha and Dragonstar,
Thank you for visiting and commenting.
Yes, this practice is ongoing and I think our support even if it is minute in the greater picture, does help.
I followed several links-I found the video from where the photo is taken, the link from the original Reunião newspaper that mentioned the local fisherman that was punished for using a dog as bait, also another petition online.I translated freely what I found.I'm still lookig for more news...
That is a travisty.....just horrible....of course I will sign...
I first saw this post the other day and it made me feel really sick. I could not get the image out of my mind for the rest of the day and even the next day it was still there.
I shall certainly sign the petition. I cannot believe people can do this to defenceless animals.

Dear all,
From what I have read, this story was first brought to light in 2005 but the practice is on going. The Brigitte Bardot Foundation is quite active in fighting this practice. I don't think much can be done unfortunately but our concern and our signatures may help a little. Let's hope so anyway.
I caught your page off another site about this poor dog. This picture has gotten me so upset that I will help with the cause...

I forwarded your article and petition re Reunion Dogs as Shark Bait to several people including my MP (Philip Dunne, MP for Ludlow) His secretary was so upset at the sight of the first attachment she refused to open any others. He has written to the Minister to see what representations can be made to bring an end to this cruelty, and will keep in contact with me. I'll keep you informed.
Alan B,
Thank you for your action on this.
And yes, please keep me informed.
Do you have an e-mail address?
