First dog

Among the offices Barack Obama has yet to fill, one has a special importance to his family: first dog. At his first post-election news conference, the president-elect said that the issue of a "first dog" for daughters Malia and Sasha had generated more interest on his website than any other topic. "We have two criteria that have to be reconciled. One is that Malia is allergic, so it has to be hypoallergenic," he said. "On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me."
I ask myself the following two questions?
1. Can someone explains to me what a “hypoallergenic” dog is?
2. Are Afghan Hounds still banned from the White House?

My answer to your first question about hypoallergenic....

If someone has an allergy to dog fur, the hypoallergenic dog is a better choice. Dogs in this category are, I think, poodles, bichon frises and the specially-bred Labradoodles, all of which do not shed their fur.

Old English Sheepdog are in this category too - I have a friend who's allergic to fur so she has an old English called Biggles...

They're probably better off with toy dogs or guard dogs left outside. I read a pastiche about what puppies may be brought for BO to the G20 meeting ranging from poodles to shih tzus.

I'd imagine you'd approve of that, Eurodog. Like the new avatar too.

If someone is allergic to dogs its better to not chance it because they may end up not being able to keep it.

I thought wheaton terriers were the dogs most recommended as "hypoallergenic" dogs. I don't think you find too many of those in the pound, like none.

I was wondering about the first question myself.
